Where are you uploading?
Nothing leaves this device. Open your browser’s Network tab and watch — your document never appears.
What this checks, and what it cannot
Two rules are published for these uploads and no more: how big the file may be, and which file extensions are accepted. Both are checked here against the authority’s own wording, which is quoted beside every result.
One thing is checked that the authority does not publish: whether the file is actually what its name says.
A phone that saves a photo as scan.pdf has produced a JPEG with a misleading name. Renaming a file
does not convert it. Most upload forms read the first few bytes and reject the mismatch without saying why, and
it is a genuinely hard thing to notice on your own.
It cannot tell you whether you have the right document. Nothing here reads what the page says or knows which form you are filling in. A perfectly-sized PDF of the wrong bank statement passes every check on this page.
Why Canada has six different answers
IRCC runs six separate online systems, and they were built at different times. The result is published on IRCC’s own help centre and is not a mistake in this tool:
The IRCC secure account accepts .doc and does not list .docx — and
.docx is what every version of Word since 2007 saves by default. The online citizenship
application lists no Word format at all. The Permanent Residence Portal is the only one that does not
accept TIFF. Two portals allow 5 MB and four allow 4 MB.
None of this is announced when your upload fails. That is the entire reason this page exists.
Every number here came from the authority, not from us
Each target names the page it came from and links to it. If an authority does not publish something, it is not checked and the row says so — the new IRCC portal publishes a size limit and no format list, so its format is not tested rather than guessed at from a sibling portal.
A rule we invented would be worse than a rule we left out, because an invented one fails a file that would have been accepted and the person never finds out why.
