This reads text. It does not read pictures of text.
A PDF made from a word processor contains real text objects, and this page pulls them straight out. A PDF made by a scanner or a phone camera contains an image of a page — there is no text in the file at all, and extracting it needs OCR, which this page does not do. If you get an empty result, that is what happened, and the page tells you so plainly instead of handing you a blank file.
Layout is approximate, on purpose
A PDF stores each run of characters at a coordinate; it has no idea what a paragraph is. Line breaks here are inferred from vertical positions. Prose comes out well. Multi-column layouts and tables come out in reading order, not visual order, because that is the honest reconstruction of what the file actually contains.
Nothing is uploaded
Contracts and statements are exactly the documents worth not sending to a stranger's server. The parser runs in your browser. Here is how that is enforced.
How to extract the text from a PDF
- Drop in the PDF.
- Leave the page box blank for the whole document, or type a range.
- Press Extract text, then copy it off the page or save a .txt file.
